Fewer consultations in our practice are as emotionally charged as the patient seeking hymenoplasty.  Patients seek this procedure for many reasons, but most commonly it is to physically reverse an unwanted sexual encounter, or to enable a marriage which requires virginity as a precondition.
Our patients are often surprised to find themselves in a Plastic Surgeon’s office, not associating plastic surgery with a gynecologic procedure.  It so happens that reconstruction of female genitalia, either following cancer surgery (vulvectomy) or in transgender surgery is a common part of plastic surgery training, and repair of a torn hymen is extremely simple relative to these other reconstructive procedures.  An office like ours is also able to provide the privacy and confidentiality that is impossible to offer in a general hospital.
Does hymenoplasty ‘work’?  Sutures used in the repair have fully dissolved by 3- 6 weeks following surgery, and the hymenal membrane heals without visible scar making detection of surgery impossible.  Bleeding and pain during intercourse has been described to us as ‘ a bit more than the first time’, but that was not seen as a negative characteristic.  No doubt confidence in one’s ‘virginity’ is the most important criteria for a successful performance.
Is hymenoplasty immoral? We are in no position to give advice here, but until men are required to be virgins at marriage it seems hypocrisy to expect that of women.  What of beginning a marriage with a lie?  Not ideal, but every relationship has its share of deceptions, and it is for you to decide if this one is necessary.

The Hymenoplasty can works until get married for how long time? Is not any prblem when have a mestrual period?

By 3-6 weeks after hymenoplasty, virginal intercourse would be reproduced. We do not close the entire vaginal opening, but only close the lower 2/3s and thus menstrual flow is unobstructed.

Having the period just 3 days after revirginization will harm the operation?

This is a common question. Repair of a torn hymen only blocks part of the vaginal opening, and so menstrual flow or ‘period’ can pass through the remaining opening without concern. It should go without saying that a sanitary pad should be used, not a tampon!

Each patient we care for is assessed for their physical and mental fitness for surgery. That said, we have not yet had to deny surgery to anyone seeking hymenoplasty. A minimum of 6 weeks is recommended for healing after hymenoplasty.

I understand the hymenoplasty surgery is safe and guaranties one bleeding after intercourse. However, what would happen if one menustrates three days after the procedure, would this cause the sutures to dissolve, or does this not affect sures at all. Also, after the procedure can one walk normally or is her step altered. Finally, how does one wash their vagina after the procedure to avoid infections resulting from a lack of hygiene.

Hi, you said the vaginal opening is only 2/3 closed after hymenoplasty such that normal menstrual blood can flow out. However, the question is, if ones period comes three days after the surgery, would that not dissolve sutures used to repair or hold the repaired hymen hence distorting the repaired hymen?

You are voicing a sensible concern, but we have not yet had a hymenoplasty fail, and we do not take precautions to time procedure relative to menstrual cycle.

Our patients do walk normally after surgery. We do not recommend any cleaning regimen after the surgery, although a gentle douche with dilute (1/100) betadine solution can be used.

The repaired hymen will remain intact just as would a virginal hymen, until intercourse or other trauma disrupts the membrane.

Does hymenoplasty make your vagina tight too? Is it the same as being a virgin? Will my vagina be in the same shape as it was when I was a virgin? I’m looking for a procedure that would make my vagina in the same shape as it was before. I don’t have kids but I feel it is not very tight. The reason I’m looking into this procedure is because I want to give that feeling of doing it the very first time to my boyfriend. Is it the right procedure for my needs? Thanks

Injury (tears) during child-birth can create laxity in the vaginal opening. As you have not given birth, a hymen repair should be more than sufficient to achieve your goals.

Does the surgery have any long term side effects?

Dr. Kreidstein Says:
January 10th, 2012 at 10:14 am

Hymenoplasty is not intended to make vagina tight, but simply to reconstruct the cover to the vaginal opening (hymen) for women seeking bleeding that would imitate virginal intercourse. Procedures have been described to tighten the vaginal opening (”Vaginal Rejuvenation”), but the American College of Obstetricians and Gyncecologists (experts in vaginal function) do not recommend this procedure.
Our current fee for Hymenoplasty is $2500 + hst.

At consultation we review the potential side-effects from surgery (including altered sensation/pain and wound complications including failure of the repair), but we have not yet had a patient report any such problems.

How long does it take for the surgery to be done? Does the patient have to spend days or its just one day?

Dr. Kreidstein Says:

The surgical time for hymenoplasty is 30 minutes. Our patients stay for a few hours after surgery, then begin normal light activities immediately.
